San Telmo
is significant in the History of Buenos Aires. it served as a an
arrival point for thousands of immigrants who had to endure harsh
living conditions in tenement homes.
There are food vendors and local restaurants. If you get hungry, wait
until you are several blocks down (away from Plaza de Mayo) before
grabbing a bite to eat... the first restaurants get packed and can be
ridiculously busy. If you like empanadas, there are a few locally
owned shops that make great ones along the way. I started around 10am
and was out around 2pm.There is a nice italian restaurant nearby The
street fair at San Telmo, has lots of Tango street performers,
musicians (even a walking band with drums), artists, etc. Parts are
kind of like a flea market with older items, and parts are like a
clothing boutique area.
